Film dengan teknologi 3D CGI adalah hasil kerjasama Blue Sky dan Fox yang ingin mengulang sukses seperti film trilogi Ie Age. Film Rio ini bercerita tentang Blu, burung kakak tua aneh dari Minnesota, yang memutuskan untuk melakukan petualangan ke Rio de Janeiro.
Rio berseting di kota Rio de Janeiro dan hutan-hutan di Brazil. Film animasi komedi dan petualangan ini di pusatkan pada tokoh utamanya yaitu Blu. Blu merupakan seekor burung kakak tua jantan langka yang mengira dirinya adalah yang terakhir dari rasnya.
Namun perkiraannya itu berubah ketika dia bertemu dengan burung Blu betina yang memiliki ras yang sama dengannya.
Tapi pertemuan mereka bukanlah cinta dipandangan pertama, karena pertentangan karakter Blu yang perkotaan serta takut terbang dan Jewel yang mandiri dan suka terbang. Tapi bersama-sama mereka menjalani petualangan yang mendebarkan, dan saat itulah mereka belajar tentang makna persahabatan, cinta, keberanian, dan keterbukaan.
